Tropical Storm the storm Gains Power While Moves Towards Jamaica
Hurricane the storm is projected to strengthen into a infrequent category five storm as it veers toward the Caribbean island, delivering life-threatening rapid inundation and rock falls.
The cyclone, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to reach land by midweek, according to meteorological authorities.
Warnings of blackouts and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane brings up to 76cm of rain and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," inhabitants have been advised.
This hurricane is the 13th cyclone in the current Atlantic storm period, which usually concludes in November.
Most Intense Storm Risk
A highest-level hurricane is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.
Although this storm is expected to diminish in strength to a fourth-level cyclone before arriving at the island, meteorologists said there was "minimal real distinction in the overall impacts" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it hits the island.
Critical Preparations
With tropical storm-strength winds and rain already expected well before it moves across the island's interior - possibly even the capital, Kingston - warnings state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".
"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall have begun and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and many landslides," urged meteorological officials.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated: "I know that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and appropriately: concern is justified.
"However the most effective method to address nervousness and any unease and concern is to be prepared."
Residents are being advised to protect their properties with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to gather necessary supplies.
Broader Impact
Warnings are also ongoing for areas in Haiti such as the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.
Rock slides currently triggered by the cyclone have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.
Projected Path
This weather system is predicted to move across the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Caribbean archipelago and out into the open ocean.
By the point it arrives at Cuba, it is predicted to have reduced to a category three cyclone.
Climate Connection
Although it is challenging to associate specific storms to environmental shifts, scientists say it is resulting in weather phenomena more prevalent and more severe.
Higher ocean heat create additional humidity in the air, aiding in the formation of tropical cyclones.
Before the commencement of this year's Atlantic hurricane season, weather organizations predicted increased storm frequency, referencing heated marine conditions and likely enhanced seasonal rains around West Africa - where Atlantic storms typically originate.
