This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
