"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated admirers have also begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a close gang. Their videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
