Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
