An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This broader defence environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, including transport use to communication habits.
