Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – But It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An new initialism came to light several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a child who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it refutes everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
