The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
