Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
