Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
